Am I overthinking this interaction with my driving instructor?

Preface: I, 20F, had my first ever driving lesson today with an instructor (outside of my area, so I don’t think he’d be known “locally” although he did do lessons in my area previously) and I can’t for the life of me figure out if he was acting weird or not.

My brother’s gf did her lessons with him and she said that he was generally nice to her, which is why I booked with him in the first place.

The Interaction: My instructor pet my head several times while talking to me?? I was so so nervous during the lesson from start to finish even though I didn’t make any mistakes (generally a nervous person), so I didn’t really concentrate on that at all in the moment. He also gave me a hug while we were still in the car because I started crying (previous driving experience has me borderline traumatised haha) and then he like…pet my face..? I feel like I’m going crazy because I’ve never experienced this before…but if I was going to rationalise it, it felt like he was trying to calm me down?

I’m not from Ireland so is this normal behaviour for men in their late 60s or what 😭 he was very nice to me but I found this a bit strange so I thought I’d ask. Additionally, this instructor has really good reviews and like 16 years experience so I’m doubly confused.
