When was the first time you signed for something?
I was 10 years old, parents had popped out.
Postman knocked. Signed for delivery.
I told him I can't sign. He incredulously asked why not? Being a child & socially awkward, I could only repeat that I can't sign.
What I meant was: 'I can't sign because I don't know how to (I have no signature), I've never had to do this before!'.
I think he understood it instead as: 'I can't sign because there are forces constraining me from doing so', & he probably thought 'But no one's physically stopping you, & why would anyone not let you sign for a parcel?'
After the second time of being asked, I relented & did a little scribble.
I think I came up with my real signature at 14 & signed a real document when I set up my bank account at about 17.
