Buying a car for my son

My son turns 17 in 3 weeks and has enough money to buy a car. Id like to get the car before his birthday so that on the big day, I can take him out for his first drive. I've googled and read that legally he can't own a car before he turns 17. Am I right in thinking that when making the purchase, I "pay" form the car (using his money) but we make him the registered keeper? The other question is getting the car home and storing it. We have a very short driveway in front of our garage which isn't actually long enough to keep a car without it slightly overhanging the path. It's in a small cul de sac and leaving a car there wouldn't actually affect anyone but we still don't currently do it out of courtesy. I'm thinking the best option is to get temporary insurance in my name and tax the vehicle for a month to keep it on the road. I'm assuming I can do this despite not being the registered keeper?
