What song got you into Dream Theater ?
For me it was around 2010 and I was extremely burnt out on listening to the same stuff all the time, I was very disillusioned with my guitar playing and drumming as well. I had become just bored and stagnant with all of it.
I had just opened my business and had a new shop space and had lots of time and work to do, so I started listening to new music through Google play music I believe it was at the time.
I believe the first song I heard from Dream Theater was "Dark Eternal Night", but I only have faint memories of it. I know for certain though that the song that got me very interested in Dream Theater was "In the Name of God". I remember thinking this is so catchy and has such an amazing groove, and instantly become infatuated with the drumming especially the odd time signatures and the stellar guitar work, as well as really appreciating the lyrical content and vocals. It's hard to describe really what the music did to me.
I instantly started taking a dive into their music and the first full album I listened to was BC&SL. I guess in retrospect it's very fitting I didn't get into the rest of the albums upon each respective first listen, with the exception being "Images and Words" .
In a lot of ways discovering Dream Theater really saved my interest in music as a whole. I'm now playing four instruments and counting and I've been working nearly exclusively on writing music for the past 5-6 years, as I am no longer getting much joy from playing music created by others(including Dream Theater). What I am doing now is much more fulfilling and I have DT to thank for the inspiration!
EDIT: Wow!! Over 215 comments and nothing in here bashing;
