Waste water leak in rented flat, England

Hi all. From July to January I had to rent a flat temporarily due to being made homeless due to a fire. This flat had a lot of problems that needed fixing during my time there.

The biggest problem was that there was a leak from somewhere and the carpets were getting soaking wet. The letting agents kept sending a handyman out to find the problem but he was useless. I managed to find a fitting that had come lose on the pipework and showed him and he replaced it. We thought that would be problem solved, it dried up a little bit but then the problem became much worse. So bad I had to buy welcome mats to put around the property to step across because the carpets were that bad.

One day a manager from the letting agents came out with the handyman to try and solve the problem, I suggested it might be from next door and to call the building management company. After that phone call I was informed that there was a leak from the waste water pipe work in one of the flats above that was tricking down and pooling into the property.

This is “black water” aka waste water aka toilet water.

During the time of the leak, from end of September to end of November, I kept being told it was condensation and to open windows and heat the property. The letting agents said the were going to ask the landlords to buy a dehumidifier but nothing came of it so I bought my own. I had to keep the heating running, dehumidifier running, buy mats to place about the place.

My question is am I entitled to any compensation due to living in a flat that was contaminated with waste water for 3 and a half’s months? When the letting agents found out it was waste water at the end of November they just told me it should be fixed soon and it’ll dry out. I had no where else to live so I had to stay there. I got violently ill for two days which could be due to the leak but can’t be proved. I had days off due to anxiety and stress. I had to buy and run a dehumidifier, raise the heating up but mats. The letting agents ordered no help

Sorry if this was a bit of a ramble, thank you in advance
