Bring on the Celtics. Their defensive hype is going to get a reality check.
"Celtics gonna switch every pick and roll, they have athletic bodies to guard Luka and Kyrie"
"Dallas hasn't faced a team that can guard them like this"
I'm not an X's and O's guy, but it seems like people hyping up the Celtics as a different beast don't understand two things: 1) Mavs have a huge advantage in rim protection and 2) we've beaten a team with their blueprint.
Let's look at the first. Say we assume the Celtics have four equally switchable defenders to guard Luka and Kyrie. What happens when Kyrie beats one of them off the dribble, or when Luka puts them on his hip? Who protects the rim for Boston? 37 year old Al Horford? Defensive sieve Tingus Pingus? Kyrie has one of the best layup packages of all time. We have Lob Goblins. And we haven't even talked about rebounding. Even if Boston has outstanding perimeter defense, that doesn't solve the Mavs offense. People don't realize that.
Second. The Thunder thought the same thing going into their series with the Mavs. They had a lanky shoot-first "center," tons of athletic wings, and an arguably better main option. It was close, but what did the Mavs do? Killed them on the glass. Scored more points in the paint. Had our role players hit clutch threes. We can do it again.
GO MAVS!!!!
