I only fight the same 5 characters wtf

I decided to buy this game last friday(huge fighting game fan) I decided to main Shao Khan. I'm pretty good with him have no problem with matches since I labbed him for like 3 hours and did some towers before playing online. I have 50 matches and no BS I've fought ALL THE SAME CHARACTERS AND EVERYONE PLAY THEM EXACTLY THE SAME. I've had more variety of matches in SF. TEKKEN, hell even MK11. I swear to god I've fought only 1 Raiden and 1 Liu Kang. I've fought 0 reptiles nitra or pretty much most of the cast. Dude I haven't even fought a scorpion. Am I missing something? Or is this just MK1 in a nutshell. I'm just confused why it seem like people are avoiding some characters. I figured I would've fought a smoke by now

Conan, Omni man, Sub zero, Cyrax, Ghostface,

With a small sprinkle of Noob, Kung Lao, Mileena, and Kitana. I've fought them at least once.
