Influencing industry illustrates how our society is becoming increasingly anti-intellectual and anti-science
I know this is a little heady and to be clear I’m not talking about the fashion girlies posting OOTDs. Just curious how if others feel similarly:
I think the internet is a wonderful, wonderful thing. If you asked me a few years ago if I thought we were more informed because of it I would say yes. Now I would say no - confused if anything. Our acceptance of political misinformation has trickled down to our acceptance of misinformation about mental and physical health, finances, real estate, parenting etc.
I see it EVERYWHERE. Why are we so comfortable relying on people with no credentials or expertise? A friend diagnosed herself with PCOS from a PCOS influencer and now adheres to PCOS diets provided by people that aren’t dietitians. People are drinking raw milk because Ballerina Farm drinks raw milk. People listen to medical advice from “Dr” Will Cole…who is NOT a real doctor, because he brushes shoulders with Gwyneth Paltrow. Parents are seeking parenting advice from mommy vloggers who are anti-shoes, toothpaste and education. Why is Mel Robbins a mental health guru when she has absolutely no formal education? And even lower stakes but people actually buy Eli Rallo’s self-help book about relationships when she’s had like one relationship lol. People are also replacing their tv shows and movies with YouTube vlogs. I’m not a film/tv snob, I love trash tv. But the idea that people are increasingly consuming less thought provoking, artistic, analytical, historical content, etc. is becoming glaringly obvious.
Idk. On one hand, I believe in knowledge coming with experience. I understand that we have a lot of problems in many of our industries and that there are many barriers people face in accessing actual experts. But I’m just over it. This all started when I saw a vibrating plate on Tik Tok. I tried to find actual doctors that supported the benefits of vibrating plates but there were literally hundreds of creators counseling people about the medical benefits. These people have SPINAL INJURIES and are asking a Tik Tok shop influencer if a vibrating plate is Safe? Da fuq???
