Finally saw The Brutalist

Watched Anora Friday and the Brutalist last night. From a director’s perspective, I am lost as to how it can be a race btwn Sean Baker & Brady Corbet. It just feels night and day to me in terms of vision, artistry and execution that Corbet dominates in.

From a film perspective- while I can appreciate the good movie that Anora is, I’m personally lost on how it’s become this best pic darling..? I thought Mickey Madison was great but- I’m not getting how everyone is raving about it being this amazing performance. I don’t know, maybe it was the hype, but it didn’t live up to it imo and I kind of saw the plot a mile away. I hate that I can’t see I’m Still Here because I have a feeling Torres’ performance is well worth the win. I much preferred the understated work Demi Moore did in The Substance. As opposed to Adrien Brody who I thought was excellent.. but I also think Sebastian Stan was excellent in a Different Man too.

And I also think that Felicity Jones’ supporting acting was also excellent! I’d be happy with her, zaldaña, or Ariana. I think Rossellini is great in Conclave but doesn’t warrant the nom imo. Just too little screen time and too little (though powerful) scenes.

I don’t know- I hate that I haven’t seen I’m Still Here… I’m fine to skip A Complete Unknown and I look forward to watching it, but from what I’ve seen, Conclave is the most complete and well tuned pic, with The Substance taking 2nd, the the Brutalist. Although even as I type that, I have to say I did enjoy the Brutalist but it was trying to do/say a lot… very ambitious and it came close to pulling it off but it was a little uneven to me. Conclave & the substance were more focused and executed better… but again Substance lost its rails there in the last 30-45 min.

I’m not understanding how Anora is anywhere close to a complete Best picture for the Oscar’s. I feel bad saying that cuz I wanted to like it, but it just didn’t do much for me.

Anyway,

  1. Conclave 2.a The Substance //2.b The Brutalist
  2. Wicked
  3. Dune 2
  4. Anora
  5. Emilia Perez
