Twisted Metal for ps1 sucks?

I'm doing my first marathon in the franchise, and apart from 2, I can't control the car properly in the others. I see a lot of people praising the games, saying good things but I can't see that. I can barely pass the level 2 in all of them without using Cheat code. I know the difference between a difficult and challenging game and a game with terrible controls, does anyone knows if thats me who sucks or does anyone have similar experiences with the terrible controls?
