Traveling via SA

Question for you vana sadza: I am flying home via SA OR Tambo. My layover in SA is overnight and I have decided to just book a hotel right by the airport. Do I need a visa or some kind of permit to spend the night in SA considering that I have to leave the airport to go to the hotel?
