Zoom H5 - when in USB interface mode, no phantom power. Options?
EDIT/UPDATE - I found some 1.5v AA batteries and solved the issue - these were able to provide the phantom power required while in USB I/F mode!
hi all, I want to record stereo from my H5 (using my 48v phantom powered Rode NT5 mics) to my android phone (samsung S23). I can do this with the Zoom - but only with the XY mic on the zoom, OR with non phantom powered mics. I want to use my Rode NT5 pair, which require 48V power. These work great with the H5, just not in USB I/F mode.
After some experimenting, I am certain the H5 does not deliver phantom power when in USB interface mode. The only possiblity is that 1.5v AA's are needed, the eneloop pros I have are only 1.2V.
When in USB I/F mode, I was able to use a regular dynamic mic, but when I used my rode NT5's (with phantom 48V power on) there was still no signal.
To externally power the H5, you have to use the USB port, which means can't also use it as a USB interface as there is only one USB port - duh!
I think my options are:
- It's a battery voltage issue - experiment with 1.5v batteries. bit of a minefield, looks like XTAR do 1.5v rechargeable, hopefully compatible with my nitecore UM4 charger. or invest in a new 1.5v battery setup.
- get an external 2/2 phantom power supply in between H5 and NT5's. Another device, another thing to power, 2 more XLR cables. not very nice.
- get a new recorder that can handle this scenario better i.e. can support external power AND work as a USB interface with 48v phantom power. any candidates?
I think having an easily externally powered recorder that can also act as a USB interface at the same time is probably the best solution. Always have a few power banks sitting around etc.
thanks for any feedback.
