Is it possible to read just the first dune?

I've seen dune get allot of praise and was hoping to pick it up. However after learning about how extensive the series is I'm kinda put off as I don't really feel like investing that much time into a narrative for the payoff. So if someone whose read the original dune or dune series can tell me whether or not the first installment has sufficient payoff with no cliffhangers or underdeveloped plots and is viable as a stand alone read that would be great.
