Christmas/holiday rota FY1/2

Hi all, Final year med student here. I was wondering if F1/2 are normally working on Christmas/ new years? How does it work and who decides? Can you take time off? I am a bit stressed as my family lives abroad and I rarely see them, they’re also non medic so don’t really understand the “essential personell” thing.
