How to do the local bookstore thing?

I use Amazon a lot. I know I've heard John say many times something about supporting small local bookstores, but I don't remember specifically how he explained to do pre-orders. Or to find them. Do I just search for bookstores in my city and ignore the ones I recognize? And then do I have to bring the ISBN to them and ask them to pre-order The Anthropocene Reviewed?
