Oculus Rift S Issue
I just recently got a Rift S from my family and was using it. For some reason, the screen will freeze for a second and then turn black and the orange light will come on for like a minute and then reset. I also noticed, all my USBs will also crash and reset. Sometimes the headset will reconnect correctly, and sometimes I will have to replug the DisplayPort or USB. This issue usually only happens when my headset is on my head, and will happen at random times. Sometimes I play Half Life Alyx for like 2 hours with no problems, and sometimes I can’t play without the headset resetting every 1-5 minutes.
I originally thought this was a cord problem. I decided to put the headset on and mess with the cord like crazy. While yanking kinda hard on the cord, there was basically no problems until I pulled a little too hard. This was different though because a static screen came up before the screen went black, and then the headset reconnected immediately.
While surfing online, I saw a lot of people with the same issues as me, and they said that it was a power problem. That would make sense since it seems like my USBs are all getting reset from lack of power. I tried all of my ports, but they all had the same problem, although some ports were a little more consistent compared to others. This is my current PC setup.
MSI MPG Z490 Gaming Edge motherboard, Intel i7 10700k, RTX 2080, 48GB DDR4 ram, 750w PSU.
All the ports on my pc are USB 3.2 gen 1, with the exception of 2 USB C, 1 USB 3.2 gen 2, and 2 USB 2.0. My GPU also has a USB C.
Would my best alternative be to get a PCIE USB 3 card? I was thinking of grabbing a USB 3 powered hub to see if that might help. I tried using a Powered USB 3.0 Active M/F extension cable, but my PC wasn’t even recognizing that the Rift S was plugged in. Since the powered extension cable didn’t work, I’m worried that the powered USB hub won’t work either.
Before anyone recommends a new headset, I’m already getting a Quest 2 soon. I just wanted to troubleshoot the Rift S so I can play games that require lower latency.
