Conservative audiences

There is a new Ring cycle at Opera Bastille, in Paris. Rheingold is running until February 19th and the staging has sparked controversy. Calixto Bieito set up a massive microchip in the middle of the stage and turned the gods into Succession-like characters. I was not 100% convinced but I thought it had good ideas and that it still conveyed the original plot in an efficient way.

Anyway, I was shocked by some people's reactions on social media. Basically, they said that if you enjoyed that production you were an "entitled degenerate leftist woke" kind of person. I appreciate that more conservative opera-goers would prefer "traditional" stagings (although in Wagner's case the definition of "tradition" has changed over the years). But as a newcomer to opera, I find it off-putting that they frame this issue in a political way. It also seems risky because the so-called "anti-woke" politicians will use this as an excuse to slash all public funding, regardless of the type of staging.

What do you think? Do you see similar politics playing out where you're based?
