Should i do my own?

So i was planning on playing POE 1 now that the event has been out for a couple of days. i only played one charakter in poe 1 and it was a prea made build where i was following a build guide. i wanted to try to build my own charakter and my plan was just to find a skill thatnlooked cool and just play around that skill, is that a good plan and do you recomend that aproach or would you recomend something else? Othere tips are always welcome and thx in advance
