how do you do aladin's power quest?

I cant get "full charge" power attacks and so the quest never progresses. I understand you can get interupted mid animation if you bump into a guy but even at full range it never counts. I'm holding the button as long as possible and hitting guys at max range and still not counting. Is there some trick to it?
