What made the little steamboats I was on suddenly sink?

I was just cruising down the coast line heading back to camp (first time doing this) when I hear this squeaking noise similar to rats followed by my boat sinking. Luckily I was able to hop on another boat that was just passing by, for it to immediately sink as well?
