The fun and not-so-fun of parenting, re: The Mistakes Are All Waiting To Be Made
As a parent of two little kids (4 y.o. boy and 7 y.o. girl) I enjoyed Scott's post about his 6 month-olds, and hope he'll continue to write about his experiences with parenting.
I love my kids and I think I'm a pretty good dad, but I also readily admit I have struggled with how difficult it is. The article and comments touched on this difficulty. I tried to articulate my current emotional experience of having two young kids by assigning rough percentages to the prevailing feelings/emotions I have while spending time with my kids.
I'd really like to know what other people's emotional experiences are with their children. E.g., when you are with your kids, how much time do you spend feeling like you're having fun, working hard, feeling bored, feeling miserable, etc--or are you experiencing completely different emotions than I am when you are with your kids? Also, how many hours a day do you spend being "on duty" with your kid(s) (providing either active care or at least being co-responsible for their supervision)?
My Childcare Emotional Numbers:
--15% of the time: Easy-carefree-fun (eg playing at playgrounds and swimming pools, being silly together, watching TV or video gaming together, reading together, enjoying them when they're being cute/smart/kind)
--15% of the time: Hard-but-rewarding (eg involving them in activities like sports, scouts, vacations, art projects; playing games we both enjoy; teaching them things)
--55% of the time: Irritating/Tedious/Boring (eg, constantly cleaning up after them; constantly having to persuade them to do normal things like eat, get dressed, get in the car, go to bed, go back to bed; stopping little sibling arguments; playing games that are fun for them but not fun for me; repeatedly explaining why they can't have more sugar or screen-time; lamenting how rarely I get to do grown-up things; spending literal hours of my life searching around the house for their shoes so we can go somewhere)
--Last 15% of the time: Frankly Miserable (eg during meltdowns/tantrums, bigger sibling fights, refusals to go to sleep/let you sleep, rejecting the 3rd dinner entree you made them, worrying about them when they are sick, injured, or possibly in danger)
Additional notes about my numbers:
--My kids are both healthy and behaviorally and developmentally normal. I give serious admiration and respect to people who have children with special or medical needs. They are stronger than I am.
--On-Duty Hours: 8-12 per day. I'm a stay-at-home dad, so I spend probably more than average time with my kids (but they do go to schools, I don't homeschool them). About 4-6 of those hours my wife is teaming up with me after her work hours. I am experiencing burnout. I'm actually getting therapy about it. This skews my numbers toward the negative emotions. Note: when Scott said in his post that he enjoys about 2 hours a day with his twins, and can tolerate 2 hours more, I about lost my mind--2-4 hours a day of childcare would indeed be a luxury!
--I believe my numbers (and other parent's) will change depending on the kids' ages. God willing, my kids will eventually grow more independent and self-disciplined, and my "55% irritating, tedious, boring" numbers will hopefully go down.
Other parents: please share your emotional experience percentages, I'm very curious!
