Need help with magic

Hey guys, new player here. I’ve played TW before but nothing that has had magic in it and I’m kinda confused. How do you get those mages and spells that my enemies have in battle? I was so confused I just resorted to playing Dwarfs since I don’t think they use magic lol. Can you choose/craft what spells you get?
