Is management in law firms terrible everywhere?

Working at a magic circle firm and I must admit that I am underwhelmed by the ability to manage capacity across the team, ability to manage staff leave and prevent those covering from being overwhelmed with work.

There’s also just a carelessness that the training partner has, alongside a wider cultural disregard to toxic cultural habits present across the whole team.

On one hand, people will complain that there’s a shortage of junior talent. On the other hand, they will isolate and overwhelm the juniors to the point no-one enjoys working in the team and eventually end up leaving. I can’t name a trainee in my team that would happily qualify back into the team.

Is this universal across law firms? Are lawyers just terrible managers?
