Options for homeless living on/near campus?
Hello, I'm a student returning to UTD this fall. I went to UTD my freshman year, living in the dorms on campus, and paying tuition out of pocket since I didn't get any scholarships/grants / financial aid. I burned through a lot of what I had saved up just for tuition for that year. I recently was able to pay off the $15,000 private loan I took out with my parent's support, but I still have around $5,600 in federal debt from that first year.
Some more basic info about my situation: I have been living at home (outside of Dallas) for the last year, taking some online classes at a community college, and working. I'm 20 years old, looking to major in chemistry, and can't expect much more in financial support from my parents. Even working ~40 hrs per week, I haven't come close to saving enough for even one semester, taking all the associated costs into account. I have some loan options available to me which I will be taking, but I really want to limit the amount of debt I take on.
I don't have a car, but will almost certainly be needing to buy one since I don't have any other way of getting to and around campus. I was wondering, are you're allowed to sleep in your car in the student lot overnight? One option I've thought of would be to set up something of living space in my vehicle for overnight use. The feasibility of this idea will determine what kind of car I'll be purchasing— obviously, something with a more spacious interior and more reliability over a dirt-cheap junker that I'd use just to get around. I figure I could go to one of the gyms/rec on campus to shower, and I'd plan on studying mainly in the library or in coffee shops, etc.
I know this arrangement meant would be far from ideal, and likely much more challenging than I might be anticipating, but I don't see any other realistic option if I'm going to return to campus. The amount of money I have saved up probably wouldn't even cover rent for a semester, let alone tuition. I don't think attending other schools is a viable option either. If anyone has any other suggestions or experience having limited housing security, please let me know. Hope this kind of question hasn't been asked too frequently, both for the sake of avoiding repetition, and simply because I hope there aren't too many others in a similar spot. Thanks in advance for any advice.
