Church Never Turned in Wedding License - Michigan
My husband and I got married in September. Upon signing the marriage license (with our priest and witnesses), the priest insisted on taking the license and that the Church would file it with the state. I asked twice to take it, but he assured me it would be done within the required timeframe. I only found out yesterday that the Church forgot to file it (more than 60 days later) when I had requested a certified copy, and contacted the state of Michigan to ask why it took so long to receive it. They mentioned they have nothing on file.
Biggest question - is there any rule/law around the state accepting a late marriage license? We got the application in time, signed the marriage license within the 33 day window, but it was never filed. We are freaking out because my husband was approved to be on my health insurance and we were planning to file our taxes jointly. Now we are worried the state won't recognize the late submittal of our license, and it wasn't even our fault. Anyone have this experience before??
